Crestor® (rosuvastatin calcium) is in a group of drugs called HMG CoA reductase inhibitors, or “statins” and was approved in August of 2003 by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).  Crestor® is prescribed as a supplemental therapy accompanied by a low cholesterol diet and exercise program to reduce the overall level of “bad” cholesterol (LDL) and triglycerides in the blood stream along with increasing the level of “good” cholesterol (HDL).  After years of use by the public, Crestor® has now been shown to have significant risk potential.  Now, the FDA has an advisory to alert the public and healthcare professionals to these risks.

An advocacy group not associated with the FDA or the manufacturer, Public Citizen, claims that Crestor®’s side effects are severe enough to warrant a Crestor® Recall.  Public Citizen, a non-profit public interest group believes the Crestor® side effects could prove incapacitating or even deadly.  Drug maker, AstraZeneca, changed Crestor®’s European label in June 2004 due to safety concerns.  Public Citizen filed a petition with the FDA as early as 2005 calling for a ban on the drug. Since that time, Health Canada and the United States Food and Drug Administration have issued advisories regarding Crestor® due to concerns about muscle toxicity and Rhabdomyolysis.  The side effect, Rhabdomyolysis, occurs when a large number of skeletal muscle cells die. The death of the skeletal muscle cells results in the release of a massive amount of muscle protein into the bloodstream. This flood of muscle protein in the blood leads to the deadliest of Crestor® side effects. The muscle protein becomes trapped in the kidneys, affecting the filtering process of the kidneys leading to possible, if not probable, kidney failure. Other related side effects include cardiac arrest resulting from potassium released from the damaged muscle cells.

Possibly life altering and potentially lethal side effects may very well warrant a call to a Crestor® Lawyer . Best Legal Source will connect you with a Crestor Lawyer. The side effects of taking Crestor® are significant.  In addition to side effects listed above, other serious side effects include:  cardiomyopathy, myopathy, necrotizing myopathy, heart attack, type 2 diabetes, sudden cardiac death, kidney failure and death from a heart related condition.  The risks are overwhelming and have led to an outcry and demand for a Crestor® recall by Public Citizen. Crestor® has not been recalled and it is not known at this time if a recall will be made.

If Crestor® has negatively affected the lives of you or someone you know, contact a Crestor® Lawyer immediately.  There are time limits, known as statute of limitations, which can decrease the amount of time you have to file a Crestor® lawsuit.
